Hi and welcome.

My website is designed to give you an idea of what my art is like. I use a variety of media and usually my work reflects my interest in Western and cowboy related imagery. If you're interested in something, please contact me at daniel@danielshapiroart.com. I'd be happy to answer your questions. Also, check out my commercial work at www.cowboygoods.etsy.com. For those of you who want to know more about me, be sure to check out my blog.

Below is a statement about my work written by friend and curator, James Burns:

Daniel Shapiro´s work is thought provoking and penetrating. He subverts cultural meanings and turns popular notions about gender, machismo and sexuality upside down exposing their superficiality. Shapiro´s work is engaging; the titles encourage discourse as much as the imagery. His innovative use of mixed media produces multi-layered works that unfold into a story. The titles, filled with innuendo and ambiguity, provide the first line of the story; the rest is up to the viewer. Sometimes lurid, sexy, and passionate, Shapiro´s works can also appear disturbing and elusive. Much of the work incorporates Western imagery and male icons from American pop culture; one of his favorite subjects is the cowboy. Shapiro´s style varies from hard-edged and flat with colors that bump up against one another but do not blend, to abstract with blurred, hazy figures, or just an outline. As spare as some of these cowboy figures and other icons are, they invite the viewer to think critically about changing cultural attitudes in our society.
